Mazda 757 - Rotary Perfection

I captured this Mazda 757 at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca.

I love racing, so of course I also love historic racing. Every year (except when canceled due to pandemic) I attend the historic races at WeatherTec Raceway Laguna Seca. The Monterey Motorsports Reunion sees amazing vintage machinery take to the track. These are cars that I was too young to watch (or not alive for), so to be given a chance to see them is a fantastic experience.

“Is that a banshee? No, it's a Mazda rotary”

Mazda race cars are special in that they have rotary engines. Despite inherent reliability issues, the resulting powerplant produces the most thrilling sounds, some calling it the best sounding car in the world. This 757 is no different. When you hear the smooth shriek, you at first ask, "Is that a banshee?" No, it's a Mazda rotary. It's out of this world, as if it is revving out to 20,000 RPM as it goes by.

I particularly love this image caputred on a Nikon D7000, as the lighting at 5PM at the Corkscrew was perfect, and how the livery (paint scheme) matches the inside curbs masterfully. Oh, and the car is just classically beautiful for a race car.
